Robert L. "Bob" Bopp, a resident of Pilot Rock, died Sunday, December16, 2012, at his home in Pilot Rock. He was 85 years old.Funeral services will be held Friday, December 21, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. in the Burns Mortuary of Pendleton chapel. Interment will follow in the Pilot Rock Cemetery in Pilot Rock, Oregon. Contributions in memory of Bob Bopp may be made to the Blue Mt. Genealogical Society, and sent in care of Burns Mortuary of Pendleton, P.O. Box 489, Pendleton, OR 97801. Send condolences online at www.burnsmortuary.com Burns Mortuary of Pendleton is handling arrangements.Mr. Bopp was born December 14, 1927, in Indio, Calif. He was the son of Frederick J. and Ruby L. (Murphy) Bopp. He was raised and educated in California. He took one year off of school to work as a welder in a shipyard during WWII. He returned to complete school and then began working as a truck driver. He married Bobbi Rachels while living in California. They began their family there and then moved to Pilot Rock in 1951. Together they had three children. They later ended their marriage.He worked at the lumber mill in Pilot Rock. He married Karen Winnett May 31, 1975, in Walla Walla, Wash., and helped raise her three children. The family made their home in Pilot Rock. They owned and operated the Chevron Gas Station in Pilot Rock as well as a towing service, sanitation service and a logging business. Mr. Bopp retired in 1992.After his retirement he fulfilled a lifelong dream and built a home in Gustavus, Alaska, on the Salmon River. He spent every summer there enjoying fishing with family and friends. He also helped to build other homes in the area. He greatly enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, snowmobiling and the outdoors. He also enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially his grandchildren. He had been a member of the Pilot Rock Lions Club.He is survived by his wife, Karen Bopp of Pilot Rock; children: Karen Rhinehart of Carson City, Nev., Robyn Sullivan of Sumner, Wash., Chris Bopp of Mason, Ohio, Shamria Kirk of Selah, Wash., Shawna Kirk of Pilot Rock, and Shellie Wyss of Pendleton; one brother, Fed Bopp of Barstow, Calif.; 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
